Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder affecting the millions of people of all ages all around the world. Epilepsy is a chronic nervous system trouble, the hallmark of which is recurring, malicious seizures. In epilepsy, the nerve cells activity gets disturbed causing seizures or periods of abnormal behavior, sensations, tremors, muscle spasms and sometimes loss of consciousness.

Seizures are categorized into two categories like generalized seizures and focal seizures. Generalized seizures involve the whole brain, which is further categorized into absence, tonic, clonic, atonic, myoclonic, and tonic-clonic seizures. While focal or parietal seizures affect just one part of the brain and categorized into complex and simple partial seizures. In epileptic seizures, a group of neurons set in motion and started firing in an unusual, extreme, and harmonized manner.

Various factors play a crucial role in the occurrence of epilepsy including traumatic brain injury, serious illness, extreme fever, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, certain vascular troubles, brain tumor, toxic ingestion, lack of oxygen during birth, and metabolic problem. Above all, hereditary factors are responsible for the occurrence of epilepsy in people either directly or indirectly.

Epilepsy is generally a lifelong medical condition, but most people with it are able to have normal lives by controlling their seizures with aid of medications and physical therapies.
