Loette is a combined oral contraceptive (birth control pill) containing two hormones, synthetic oestrogen (ethinyloestradiol) and synthetic progestogen (levonorgestrel). This drug prevents you from becoming pregnant if taken correctly.

  • It stops the egg release by inhibiting its maturation (ovulation).
  • It changes the lining of the uterus (mother’s womb) making it less appropriate for implantation.
  • It modifies the cervical mucus consistency making it tough for the sperm to reach the egg.


This drug is also used to treat moderate acne in women apart from acting as an efficient oral contraceptive.


Loette must be taken as directed and at the same time every day, at intervals not beyond 24 hours to reach effective maximum contraceptive. Each package of this drug contains 21 active pink tablets and 7 white inactive tablets.

Loette is effective from the first day of therapy if the tablets began on Day 1 as described. Starting on days 2-7 is allowed, but during the first cycle a back-up method of contraception is recommended for the first 7 days of tablet taking.


Common side effects of Loette include breast pain, fluid retention, increased blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, mood changes, diarrhoea, acne, dizziness and excessive menstrual bleeding.


Loette is known to interact with the following drugs and increases or decreases its potency:

  • Anti-fungal drugs such as ketoconazole or Griseofulvin.
  • Antibiotics such as ampicillin, or other penicillin’s and tetracycline’s.
  • Anti-tubercular drugs like rifampicin and rifabutin.
  • Barbiturates (various types of drugs prescribed in the treatment of epilepsy, such as phenobarbitone).
  • Drugs for epilepsy (such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, Topiramate, lamotrigine and primidone).
  • Antiviral drugs such as ritonavir, indinavir (for the treatment of HIV infection).
  • Drug for the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness such as Modafinil.
  • Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone, prednisolone.
  • Drugs for the treatment of high blood cholesterol like statins (atorvastatin).
  • Anti-fungal drugs such as ketoconazole, itraconazole and fluconazole.
  • NSAIDs like Paracetamol.
  • Health supplements like ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).
  • Transplantation medicines like Cyclosporine.
  • Theophylline containing drugs used for asthma and other breathing problems.


Do not take Loette if you are suffering from or have a history any of the following medical conditions:

  • Heart attack or stroke
  • Blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), legs, or eyes
  • Inflammation of the pancreas which is accompanied with very high blood levels of triglycerides (fatty constituents)
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Chest pain (angina pectoris)
  • Heart valve or cardiac rhythm disorders that may be related with the development of blood clots
  • Some severe forms of migraine or headache, comprising migraine with fractional paralysis
  • High blood pressure which is uncontrolled
  • Breast cancer or cancer of the lining of the vagina, uterus or cervix
  • Diabetes with blood vessel damage
  • Unsolved heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Liver tumour or hepatic disease
  • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or of the skin (jaundice) during previous use of a birth control pill
  • High blood levels of cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Changes in vision, such as blurring of vision


  • If you suffer from any allergic reactions due to the ingredients of this pill, do not take this pill. Some of the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction may include swelling of the lips, tongue face, or other parts of the body; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; itching, rash, or hives on the skin.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not give this oral pill to a child younger than 18 years of age.
  • Do not take this drug if you have already experienced menopausal symptoms.


If the tablet missed is one of the inactive tablets (white), no action needs to be taken and there is no change in the protection against pregnancy.

If you are taking the 21-tablet Loette and have left a gap of more than seven days between finishing the old pack and starting the new one, additional contraception is required until the active tablets (pink) have been taken for seven consecutive days.


Symptoms of overdosage in adults and children may include dizziness, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, withdrawal bleeding drowsiness or fatigue; abdominal pain, may occur in females. Treatment of overdose, if necessary, is directed to the symptoms.
