These hormonal birth control procedures help in decreasing the chances of becoming pregnant. But they do not protect against sexually transmitted infections like HIV infection (AIDS) or Chlamydia (painful or a burning feeling while urinating, a vaginal discharge, bleeding or pain in the lower abdomen during or after sexual activity).

Ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel are female sexual hormones present in this pill. These hormones prevent ovulation (the process of egg release from an ovary). This medicine also leads to changes in your uterine lining and cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and tougher for a fertilized egg to attach to the womb.

NuvaRing is used in a 4 week cycle.

1 ring must be inserted in the vagina and kept it in place for 21 days. The NuvaRing is removed for 7 days break. During the 1 week break, you will have your usual menstrual period. After 7 days break, you should insert a new NuvaRing.

You have two methods to start using NuvaRing, if you are not presently using any other hormonal birth control device. Choose the best way for you:

  • First Day Start: Insert NuvaRing into your vagina on the first day of your menstrual cycle. Since you are using NuvaRing on the first day you will not need to use additional birth control method.
  • Day 2 to Day 5 Cycle Start: NuvaRing may also be used on days 2 to 5 of your menstrual cycle. But you have to make sure that you also use an additional way of birth control for the first 7 days of NuvaRing use in the first cycle (May it be barrier method), such as spermicide or male condoms.

When you use this birth control method, you may have spotting and bleeding between periods, that is unplanned bleeding. NuvaRing does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV infection or others.

The most common side effects associated with the use of NuvaRing are:

  • Neurological: headache (including migraine), mood changes, depression
  • Genital: vaginal discomfort, irritation inside your vagina or on your cervix, vaginal discharge, painful menstrual periods and low libido
  • Others: nausea and vomiting, weight gain, acne and abdominal pain

Some serious side effects may include heart attack or stroke, blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis), clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolus), and loss of eyesight.

Some medicines may increase or decrease the effectiveness of hormonal birth control:

  • Anti-HIV combinations (such as darunavir/ritonavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, and tipranavir/ritonavir)
  • Drugs for treating chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (aprepitant)
  • NSAIDs such as acetaminophen
  • Anti-seizure drugs (like phenytoin, carbamazepine, barbiturates, oxcarbazepine, and topiramate)
  • Anti-fungal agents like griseofulvin
  • Vitamin health supplements like Vitamin C or ascorbic acid
  • Medicines used in the treatment of tuberculosis (such as rifabutin and rifampicin)
  • Antiviral drugs which inhibit non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase (such as etravirine, nevirapine)
  • Medicines used to reduce blood cholesterol such as rosuvastatin and atorvastatin

Do Not use NuvaRing if you:

  • Smoke and are over the age of 35 years. Smoking intensifies the risk of serious blood vessel and heart diseases including blood clots, heart attack, or stroke which can be serious.
  • Are pregnant or thinking to get pregnant.
